The Half-competent Cook
Genghis Khan, later paraphrased by that eminent philosopher Conan the Barbarian, once said,
"The greatest happiness is to vanquish your enemies, to chase them before you, to rob them of their wealth, to see those dear to them bathed in tears, to clasp to your bosom their wives and daughters."
For the more enlightened, good food is one of life's greatest pleasures — although the bosom-clasping thing does have a certain attraction, I'll concede. Then again, the Great Khan subsisted largely on a diet of yak bodily fluids, so it's not altogether surprising that his idea of a good time didn't appear to involve fine cuisine.
I've always been an unadventurous cook, too timid to subject others to the results of my culinary experimentation. Recently however, I've been trying out a few recipes on myself, liberally adapted from the works of others, when I've had the chance. Here then, are a few of the dishes I've attempted and seem to have turned out OK.
If you're wondering what the photo has to do with food, well, the answer is: absolutely nothing. I didn't have any pictures of food, so I picked a random image from the photos I've taken. This one shows the house that belonged to the late film director, Derek Jarman, on the Dungeness Peninsula in Kent.
